Ngöndro Teachings with Drupla Sonam Tsering
February 12, 2022 @ 6:45 pm – 8:45 pm +0545
Samye Institute is delighted to announce a new bi-monthly teaching series offering to the global sangha. In this series, Drupla Sonam Tsering will provide instructions and commentary on The Four Foundations or Ngöndro practices of the Tukdrup Barché Künsel.
Drupla will be teaching on the Seed of Supreme Awakening, the extensive Ngöndro of the Lamé Tukdrup Barché Künsel from Jamyang Khyentsé Wangpo. He will begin with an introduction to these foundational practices and will explain why they are fundamental to Vajrayana practice. Drupla will then guide us through the common preliminary practice, emphasizing the internalization of those contemplations. He will also discuss each of the 5 extraordinary foundations, dedicating one session to each practice.
Transmission of the Practice Text
Transmission for both concise and extensive Ngöndro will be provided during the teaching. This is an essential teaching for anyone interested in beginning or continuing Ngöndro practice. It is also a powerful opportunity to make an auspicious connection with the teachings of the Chokling Tersar. As we prepare to enter the new Tibetan year (on March 3), we encourage any individuals who have been considering this practice to join us for these teachings.
Date and Times of the Teachings
The first session of this teaching series will be on February 12th at 6:45PM Nepal Time (Check your local time here). Subsequent sessions will occur every other Saturday at the same time. Registration covers all sessions in this series.
These teachings will be in Tibetan and translated into English, Spanish, Portuguese, Vietnamese, and Indonesian.

Further Resources
The Ngöndro practice is the gateway to the Traditional Vajrayāna Path, and is the starting point of Phakchok Rinpoche’s Traditional Vajrayana Path. Kyabjé Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche said in his introduction to The Great Gate (Rangjung Yeshe Publications:
When putting the Buddhist path into practice, all the paṇḍitas of India and the masters of Tibet agree that one must purify the obscurations and gather the accumulations. Due to the vastness of the Dharma teachings, one person is unable to practice all of them. For this reason, the essence of all the sūtras and tantras were condensed into four things to think of, the four mind changings, and four things to practice, the preliminaries of four times one hundred thousand (ngöndro).
Samye Institute has a course devoted to these practices. In this course, Phakchok Rinpoche and senior instructors provide detailed explanations and commentary on each practice according to the Tukdrub Barché Künsel Ngöndro.
The Great Gate: A Guidebook to the Guru’s Heart Practice is a compilation of instructions on the preliminary practices by the great masters, Chokling Dewey Dorje, Dudjom Rinpoche, Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, and Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche. It is of great benefit for any students continuing or considering beginning Ngöndro practice. Akara Collection also has a thangka depicting the Refuge Tree associated with the Preliminary Practices of the Tukdrup Barché Künsel cycle.
