The Third Link – Consciousness
Rinpoche says that the third link is “consciousness” and it refers to the consciousness of habitual tendencies, the undercurrent of thoughts.
“All ground consciousness” refers to that aspect of the mind which continues, the stream of consciousness that continues even when we are sleeping. This aspect never ends until we are enlightened.
Thoughts,memories and emotions; our mind is held in the “all ground consciousness”. Rinpoche refers to it like a bank that keeps all our memories.
He says that we can “get out of” habitual tendencies through the practice of śamatha or “calm abiding” meditation, but we cannot get out of the all ground consciousness without highly advanced meditation techniques.
