Loneliness and Social Isolation in Long Term Care During COVID
Many elders in nursing homes and long term care centers are suffering from increased loneliness and social isolation. They are at risk for depression, confusion, and increased anxiety. The toll of their isolation and loneliness is great. Their unfulfilled need for human relationships is growing. Active relationships with family and friends has been prohibited in many facilities, and the absence of regular and meaningful interaction is so difficult for many elders.
Family members and friends can help to address this isolation by regular phone calls, letters, cards, IPAD zoom calls, and drive by visits if possible.
Because social engagement is a predictor of a longer life, it is most important that we work to solve this isolation and loneliness of our elders so that we can care nobly for those who are the most frail, and alone.
