The Nine Yanas: Shravakayana

Approach the Buddha’s teachings gradually, learning how to integrate study, reflection, and meditation.

About The Shravakayana

Although it may be tempting to race to the Vajrayana as quickly as seems possible, we are unlikely to gain any significant experience of the higher vehicles without first connecting with the foundational ones such as the Shravakayana. Because each of us will inevitably refine our understanding gradually as we traverse the path, Phakchok Rinpoche has emphasized a detailed study of each of the nine yanas and the specific meditation practices associated with each one.

Looking at the path in detail, the great masters of the past have described nine different vehicles or yanas. This course will examine the first of these—the Shravakayana—in detail, but from a practitioner’s perspective more than a scholar’s. Readings will include selections from texts like Jamgon Kongtrul’s Treasury of Knowledge. The length of this course will allow us to savor these vital, basic topics and experience the simplicity and beauty of the first stages of the Buddhist path.

The cost of the course is $108 which helps support Samye and its ongoing activities. We want to make sure that the Dharma is accessible to everyone so if you have financial difficulty, please contact us.
